Similac Recall

Abbott Voluntarily Recalls Certain Similac® Brand Powder Infant Formulas That Did Not Meet Its Quality Standards

Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted

The recall of these powder infant formulas includes:

  • Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
  • Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

To immediately find out if the product in your possession is included in this recall, parents and caregivers should visit http://similac.com/recall/lookup.aspx  and type in their lot number to determine if their product is affected, or call (800) 986-8850.

New Mothers
For new mothers we recomend scheduling a
Prenatal Visit with Dr. Makres to discuss any concerns you may be feeling anxious about.  After the birth of your child you will follow up with us 2-to-4 days after leaving the hospital for a bili check, Dr. Makres will let you know before leaving the hospital.  Click Here for Newborn Information.  At your first visit be prepared to fill out an initial history questionnaire,  patient information form.  Also, we will need insurance information, like address, who is the primary, etc., see the insurance section of the website.  After your bili check stop by the check-out window and make your second appointment for the two week old date.  We understand that if this is your first child you may have many questions, so don't hestitate to ask any of our staff or doctors.   We have provided this information so that you can be better prepared and less anxious about things.

Immunization Importance
MMR & Autism, what Dr. Makres thinks:
"Many parents ask me about the association of MMR and Autism.  I did a research project on this in February 2009 and gave a Grand Rounds presentation at Bristol Regional Medical Center on the subject.  While preparing for this topic I did a world literatrure search and can tell you there is not one single shread of legitimate evidence that links MMR and autism.  I understand that some of you, emotionally feel different about this and I would be happy to talk to you about it anytime.  But I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt there is no scientific evidence linking MMR and Autism."  TDM

Patient Facilities
Yes! We are accepting new patients.
We accept most insurance types, but to be sure please contact us.  If you have Virginia medicaid or Tenncare/Bluecare, there are a few administrative details that must be handled before being seen.  It is our office policy that the Primary Care Provider on the card be Dr. Makres, if you call your insurance and let them know you want the PCP switched they will do so.  Usually, it takes about two weeks for them to issue you a new card, at which time call our office @ 423-968-2599 and make the appointment. All other insurance types need to call the main office number to make appointments.

We will need the name and address of the insurance holder, the policy number and group number, to make the first appointment.

Currently, well child check-ups are being scheduled two-to-three weeks out due to the high number of sick patients.  We are sorry if you need a sooner time. Because of this scheduling delay we are encouraging our patients to call us and make their child's yearly physicals well in advance.

DIET & EXERCISE
ONE YEAR OLD DIET
1.  Begin whole or 2% milk but only 8 -12 ounces each day
2.  We now want your baby's nutrition to primarily come from solids not liquids
3.  Nothing to drink one hour before meals because this will decrease appetite
4.  Table foods instead of baby foods
5.  Off bottle and pacifier by 15 - 18 months.  This can cause speech problems or arch the palate & expensive orthodontic bracing of teeth later if pacifier used too much or too long
6.  No diet restrictions unless allergic reaction
7.  Remember fruits and vegetables most important & dairy product calcium; avoid simple sugars and junk food (this includes too much juice - no more than 8 ounces a day).
8.  Start vitamins (such as Poly Vi Sol + cc QD)
